SENECA NATION POW WOW - 2017
As described by the Seneca Nation, a Pow Wow is “a joyous celebration in which different tribes gather in a social atmosphere. It’s an expression of culture and an opportunity for non-Native Americans to learn and celebrate.”
The 3 day long celebration is filled with song, dance, and competition between tribes and offers an in-depth look and education into Native American culture. Dancers are placed into age groups and perform throughout the 3 days in hopes of making it to the final competition. At different times throughout the Pow Wow, on lookers are invited to join in and experience the Pow Wow hands on by dancing with the competitors. They entire vibe surrounding the Pow Wow is one of positivity, inclusiveness, and education.
This specific Pow Wow, taking place in Western New York, is named the Marvin “Joe” Curry Veterans Pow Wow. It’s made possible by Iroquois Post 1587 and the Seneca Nation and is meant to honor veterans. It’s held the 3rd weekend of July every year at Veterans Memorial Park in Salamanca, NY and is open to the public.
